Tana Karasawa Wajen, Tace,
"Hey Bae!"
Asma'u smiled.

"Hello!"
"Yeah! Uhmm, I just wanted to know the name of the guy who came here."
Asma'u smiled again,
"His name is Ya Aslam."
"Okay, thanks."
She said while getting up just as Zainab was approaching.
Zainab gave her a look and then walked over to Asma'u.
Her face was stern as she asked,
"What were you doing with that girl?"
Asma'u looked at her.
"She asked me a question."

"About whom?"
"About Ya Aslam."
"Asma'u, do you even know who that girl is?"
Asma'u's eyes widened in fear. She shook her head and said,
"No, who is she?"

"Well! She is the one they call Munasha! You know Munasha, the one who does all sorts of bad things. You need to be careful with her."

Asma'u's eyes widened in fear.
"I swear, I didn't know."

"Just be careful."
"Insha Allah."

From there, they started eating. Once they were done, they headed to the hall where the lecture was about to start. Their lecturer arrived shortly after.

The lecture ended at 4 PM, and after praying, they went to the library to study.

"Sis, teach me the lecture Sir Sabir gave you today," Asma'u said to Zee.

"Okay!"
She responded, and Asma'u grasped the concepts well. They studied until 5:30 PM, by which time their ride had arrived.

They said their goodbyes and left.

When Asma'u got home, she found her mother in the living room.

She went to her,
"Mami, how is everything at home?"

"Everything is fine, Alhamdulillah. How was school?"
"Fine, Mami."

"Get up and go eat. I know you haven't eaten anything."
"Oh Mami, I ate. By the way, Mami, Ya Aslam came to our school today."

She said with a smile. Her mother's face became a bit stern, and she asked,
"Why did he come?"

"He was just passing by and stopped for a bit."
Asma'u answered.

"Asma'u, I don't want you to let him meet you at school again. Not him or any other man. Don't let it happen again."

Her face showed concern,
"Mami, please forgive me, it won't happen again."

"It's okay, you haven't done anything wrong. But if it happens again, it will upset me."
"Please forgive me, Insha Allah, it won't happen again."

"Don't worry, now go and change your clothes."
"Are you no longer upset?"
Asma'u asked her mother.

Her mother smiled,
"Asma'u, my dear. I'm no longer upset, okay."

She smiled and went upstairs.

Her mother smiled again, shaking her head. Asma'u really disliked upsetting her parents. Whenever she made a mistake, she would worry until they forgave her.

Even her mother knew it wasn't a big deal that Aslam came to the school, but she had to be firm so Asma'u wouldn't allow it in the future, as it wasn't appropriate.

When Asma'u got to her room, she started looking for his number. On the first ring, he picked up.
"Brother, how is your journey?"

"The journey is fine, Alhamdulillah. I'm almost there."
"Are you driving fast?"

"I'm trying to get there quickly."
"Please slow down."

"Okay, talk to you later."
"Alright! Take care of yourself."

"Insha Allah!"

She hung up, sighing in relief. She went to the bathroom to take a shower and then got dressed.

She dressed nicely, wearing a matching skirt and top in cream and dark brown. She took a brown hijab and put it on, then grabbed her bag to check it.

Once she was done, she got up and went to her prayer mat, picking up her prayer beads. When she heard the call to prayer, she stood up to pray.
They headed to Standard Hospital because, even at night, there’s always a doctor available. Upon arrival, she was urgently attended to. After the initial examination, the doctor said,

  • “Amrah cannot give birth naturally; there’s a major complication, and the baby is in a breach position. The easiest option is a C-section to save either her or the baby, but one of them will be lost.”

Due to extreme distress, Ammi began reciting the Shahada. Fahimah stood trembling with anxiety. The doctor requested for her husband or father to come and sign the consent forms as time was running out, and there was no other help they could provide besides the C-section.

Talatu, displaying remarkable composure, said to Fahimah,

“Give me Ammi’s phone that you’re holding and dial my master’s number for me.”

Fahimah complied, having completely forgotten that she had Ammi’s phone since she left hers at home. Her hand shaking, she found Uwais’s number and handed it to Talatu.

  • Uwais picked up immediately, as he was also in distress, anxiously waiting for news. He wondered what had brought Amrah to their house and into Fahimah’s room in the middle of the night, and why Fahimah had left her phone to take someone else’s call at that hour. He was sure things had gone terribly wrong, and if he had heeded his mother’s advice from the beginning, none of this would have happened.

How was he going to explain this to Amrah in a way she would understand? And what would she think of Fahimah? All the love she had for her would turn into hatred today.

  • Talatu explained the situation and the doctor’s assessment calmly. Uwais felt like a mountain had collapsed on him. He wished he could instantly teleport to Nigeria. His baby! His flesh and blood, and now his mistake would be the cause of its loss.

“Give the phone to the doctor,” he said, distressed.

  • He explained to her that he was out of the country, and her parents were not around. He consented to the C-section and any necessary treatment. He added,

“Doctor, please help me not to lose either of them. I love them both, and they mean a lot to me. I’ve wronged her, and I want to seek her forgiveness… if she dies in this state, I will never forgive myself…"

  • His voice broke, uncharacteristically for Uwais, who was always bold and courageous. The doctor, noticing his distress and realizing he was not in his right state of mind, didn’t prolong the conversation and prepared Amrah for the surgery.
